In 1902, Gustave Sengbusch applied for two patents for a self-closing inkstand. This allowed for the use of an inkstand using only one hand, and it prevented the ink drying up during use. The Sengbusch Self-Closing Inkstand Company began in 1905, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and continued to produce and supply office supplies until well into the 1960's.
